The Curtain
Fig tree is located on the Atherton Tablelands just north of the
town of Atherton itself.
Like most strangler
figs, The Curtain Fig began its life as a small plant in the branches
of a tree high in the rainforest canopy. As the young fig grew its
aerial roots extended down to the ground below and tapped into the
water table. With an abundance of water & nutrients the fig
grew even more until it strangled the life out of its host tree
and it inevitably collapsed, falling against another tree. Leaning
over in its new position the fig extended more aerial roots that
grew and laced together to form a curtain of roots that makes this
tree famous and unique.
